Statement on ICE and immigration centers, planning for action from our Quaker friends:
Davis Friends Meeting approved the following Minute on August 2:
As Quakers, we of Davis Friends Meeting affirm that of God in all people. We stand in opposition to the violation of human rights and human dignity, including, but not limited to construction and operation of immigration-related detention centers. They deny due process, disrupt families, harm children, and damage the fabric of healthy communities. We call on Quakers and people of conscience everywhere to take spirit-led action to confront these immoral developments.
As we follow up on the call for action, Davis Friends hope to join with other faith communities in Davis to anticipate ICE and other federal actions against our immigrant neighbors, to support them, and to challenge policies that treat these neighbors as "alien". One immediate concern is the proposed construction of an ICE detention center on agricultural land in Gilroy, south of San Jose. This facility would become the closest to Davis, and would be a likely place to lock up our neighbors. Construction is currently blocked because of lawsuits by state and county officials, but a hearing is scheduled for September 8 at the federal courthouse in San Jose to determine whether to lift the injunction and allow construction to begin the next day. Faith groups including Quakers are planning a non-violent witness that day to demand a permanent halt to this proposed incarceration center. We hope to share more information at our potluck supper August 24.

From Dana, City of Davis: The Respite Center staff is hoping to partner with the Davis advocacy community on the following priority project ideas to immediately benefit our visitors. We’re hoping the congregations might consider launching any one of these programs to provide our visitors expanded options:

Partnership with Love Laundry: Assistance to pilot a program for laundry access. We’ve burned out multiple washers/dryers because they aren’t the appropriate capacity to handle the volume. This pilot project would offer Respite guests vouchers, limited to Love Laundry or similar laundromat, to use the larger capacity commercial machines on scheduled days of the week. The City of Woodland has a successful model (attached) which could be replicated in Davis.

Partnership with Goodwill: Assistance to pilot a program offering Respite guests vouchers to shop at Goodwill (near Love Laundry in the 8th Street Plaza). Goodwill Industries partners with St. Vincent de Paul on a similar project in Sacramento. It would be great to explore the potential to partner with the local St. Vincent de Paul affiliate to create a project in Davis. This project would provide our visitors the dignity and autonomy of shopping for a broad selection of items of their choice.

Partnerships with UC Davis School of Nursing and/or Sacramento State School of Social Work; Outreach to these schools to encourage nursing students and/or Social Work students to gain clinical hours by volunteering at the Respite Center. We’d love to be connected to anyone affiliated with these schools, or others, that might be interested.

This September marks 25 years since the tragic attacks on our country. In the years since 9/11, families of victims, survivors, and community groups have united to transform this day into a national movement of unity and giving back.
To honor those who lost their lives and the heroes who answered the call, our community is participating in a local conservation project.

NEW FALL CLASS: “REFLECTING IMAGES: CHRISTIANITY AND AI IN CONVERSATION”
Earlier this year, Pope Leo XIV released Magnifica Humanitas, a letter to the church urging us to be responsible in our usage of Al. The Episcopal Church of St. Martin, Lutheran Church of the Incarnation, and the Belfry invite you to a discussion series led by Dr. Mae Forrest Barnes. Mae has a background in theology and ethics, with a special focus in accessibility, science, and theological ethics. Please join us on Tuesdays at 7pm, September 29 through October 27, in the narthex at St. Martin’s. There is no charge for this class and it is open to everyone. St. Martins has begun a monthly Taizé service on the 2nd Sunday at 6:30pm in the church. This half hour service focuses on music and silence and is a lovely, contemplative way to get ready for the week ahead.

Also regularly on the fourth Sunday of the month at 5pm, St. Martin's will hold Pizza Church, an intentionally intergenerational service with an interactive sermon, fun music, and Communion. It will end with...pizza! Craft activities will be offered during the pizza dinner. Worship will be under an hour so you can pray, eat, enjoy some social time, and be home before bed time.
